Facebook challenges music streaming giants with Universal Music deal

They hinted that more music features could be coming.

In what may be music to the ears of Facebook users, they can now add some of their favorite songs to videos they upload and share. Additionally, YouTube aims to crack down on user uploads of copyrighted music on the platform under the deal.

The deal, announced this afternoon (December 21), will give users permission to legally upload and share videos which contain UMG-licensed music across Facebook, Instagram and Occulus for the very first time.

Infectious disease groups weigh in on CDC-budget word ban
The FDA, an agency that like the CDC is under the Department of Health and Human Services' umbrella, said on Saturday that it had not received any guidance on banned words.

But the bigger picture is just as fascinating: "a foundation for a strategic partnership roadmap that will deliver new music-based experiences online", as the pair describe it.

UMG becomes the first major music company to license its recorded music and publishing catalogs for video and other social experiences across Facebook, Instagram and Oculus, according to a report from Variety.

A successful music streaming service would strengthen YouTube's relationships with music rights holders.

Google's Chrome browser to get ad-blocking February 15, 2018
Google is in the business of serving ads, after all , so it only makes sense that they want to protect their lucrative revenue stream.

Michael Nash, executive vice president of digital strategy, Universal Music Group, said the partnership is an "important first step" demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing. The licensing agreements would be vital for a successful YouTube streaming service, with music fans unlikely to embrace a platform that has glaring gaps in its catalogue. The other major record labels are close to cutting similar deals with Facebook, sources told Billboard. Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook all made the Top 6 of the 2017 Top Apps Charts. "Music lovers, artists and writers will all be right at home as we open up creativity, connection and innovation through music and video", Tamara Hrivnak, Facebook's head of music business development and partnerships, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Facebook released its own collections of songs and song effects.

The deal marks an important milestone in the social company's ambitions to compete with Google's YouTube, now the most popular destination online for listening to music.
