Apple Watch will reportedly get an integrated EKG heart reader

Apple Watch will reportedly get an integrated EKG heart reader

While the Apple Watch now has heart monitoring features, the new electrocardiograms (EKG) tech would help detect heart beat irregularities - no doctors office required.

It's not yet clear how the company is planing on implementing the feature, though one possibility is to have the user squeeze the frame of the Watch with two fingers, and then sending an electrical current to the chest in order measure the electrical signals in the heart. Those irregularities can be warning signs for stroke and heart failure.

Apple admits to slowing older iPhones intentionally
Some Reddit users report that replacing their batteries has returned performance and CPU clock speeds back to normal. Apple says the batteries are created to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity at 500 complete charges.

The current system uses LEDs and light sensors on the underside of the Watch to track changes in blood flow from the pumping heart.

Apple is working to beef up its Apple Watch with more health features.

Facebook challenges music streaming giants with Universal Music deal
In what may be music to the ears of Facebook users, they can now add some of their favorite songs to videos they upload and share. Additionally, YouTube aims to crack down on user uploads of copyrighted music on the platform under the deal.

It's not clear when Apple could bring the future to market.

Adding EKG functionality to the Apple Watch is a logical next step for Apple, though not without challenges. Today the Apple Watch can be used to detect irregular heart beat patterns in wearers - Apple and Stanford Medical are even conducting an Apple Heart Study with this method - but you still need medical attention or a third-party smart band to have an EKG reading performed. USA health spending is forecast to grow from nearly $3.5 trillion in 2016 to $5.5 trillion by 2025, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Palestinian girl filmed hitting Israeli soldiers detained
Her father claims the video was filmed immediately after Israeli forces fired tear-gas canisters at their home. The 14-year-old boy is now in a coma.

One hurdle to tech companies such as Apple entering the medical-device market has been the stringent testing requirements imposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Following in the footsteps of AliveCor, maker of Kardia-branded accessories for iPhones and Apple Watches, Apple is said to be developing an integrated electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) reader for the Apple Watch. Portable EKGs from the likes of Medtronic Plc that work with smartphones have been available for several years.
