Apple admits to slowing older iPhones intentionally

Some have said they believe it to be effort by Apple (and other tech companies) to purposely hamper the performance in order to get users to buy new models.

Apple instituted its software fix with iOS 10.2.1 for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, and iPhone SE.

You have already had the impression that your iPhone was getting slower and slower?

Eventually, Apple responded and admitted that yes, the company had indeed been throttling the performance of some phones with aging batteries.

BlackBerry stock near a 2017 high after Q3 results beat expectations
Analysts on average had expected a break-even quarter on an adjusted earnings-per-share basis, according to Thomson Reuters. Quarterly revenue fell 25 percent from a year earlier to $226 million, but beat the average forecast of $215.4 million.

Apple says the batteries are created to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity at 500 complete charges. Whether rooted in iOS updates or degradation of the internal hardware components, several iPhone users have had enough and, according to TMZ, are taking legal action as a result.

Others have noted that devices have always been throttled for power management reasons as they get older, but added Apple could have done a better job explaining the situation.

Yesterday, we reported on a new development in the long simmering story about older iPhones beginning to feel sluggish after installing a new version of iOS.

The tech giant revealed in a statement, reported by Tech Crunch, that it released an update to its iOS operating system a year ago for its iPhone 6, 6S and SE products. (Its latest major update, iOS 11.2, does the same slowdown to an iPhone 7 with a dud battery.) But the larger problem is it leaves the impression that customers should buy a new phone when all they really need is a new battery.

I'll tell you exactly what I told my MGM and Park Theater partners - you can count on this performer always for one thing... Even Mother Monster had to acknowledge the reports when she broke the news this afternoon. "The rumors are true".

Apple acknowledged that the company does take some measures to reduce power demands-which can have the effect of slowing the processor-when a phone's battery is having trouble supplying the peak current that the processor demands. That would obviously incentivize people to invest in the new, much speedier device.

Some Reddit users report that replacing their batteries has returned performance and CPU clock speeds back to normal.

Now that degrading battery performance with time is in the spotlight - and has been linked to sluggish performance - will that impact iPhone sales?

To check your phone's battery health, download an app like Battery Life or Battery HD+ from the App Store. Now we know for certain that Apple slows old iPhones with reduced battery capacity. While it's possible to do your own battery replacement, it's a delicate and complicated surgery at the risk of doing seriously expensive harm to the device.
