It's finally over: a look back at the 2017 hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially comes to an end Thursday, and it was a catastrophic one. In 2005 there were 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes. Also it is not typical for three major hurricanes to move over the same area within a few weeks as Irma, Jose, and Maria did in 2017.

Irma arrived about 10 days later, ripping across the Florida Keys after destroying about 95 percent of the structures on the Caribbean island of Barbuda.

Hurricane Maria formed in the Atlantic mid-September and rapidly strengthened, reaching Category 5 just prior to landfall on Dominica and later causing almost indescribably catastrophic damage to Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm.

The season really heated up toward late August as major category 4 hurricane Harvey made multiple landfalls along the TX/LA coasts.

On September 20, the storm made landfall in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, as a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 155 miles per hour.

Major hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria plowed through Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico making this the costliest hurricane season on record.

"I want to thank HUD and the Trump administration for supporting those whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Irma", said Gov. Rick Scott.

The reported death toll from 2017's Atlantic storms now stands at 438 people, although the actual number could be higher.

Forecasters warned that this hurricane season would be more active than normal, and they were right. "It broke many a record, including the continental USA rain record - it produced over 51" of rain in its lifespan. A brief qualitative outlook for the 2018 hurricane season will be issued on Wednesday, Dec. 13, with a first full forecast issued in early April 2018.

The frightful hurricane season that we desperately wanted to end in August and then September, but which callously refused, is finally over.

This season was the 5th most active season on record with 6 major hurricanes: two Category 3 hurricanes, one Category 4 hurricane, and two Category 5 hurricanes.

Hurricanes can still happen after November ends, however.
