European Union regulators to discuss Uber hack next week

In October 2016 hackers had stolen personal data from 57 million Uber users and drivers, it revealed, including the names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50M Uber riders around the world, and personal information of about 7M drivers - including around 600,000 U.S. driver's license numbers.

Drivers who had their license numbers exposed are being individually notified, with Uber providing them with free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

The fact Uber allowed not one but two attacks to happen, spaced years apart, because engineers put access keys in a publicly accessible location suggests security was hardly being considered - let alone prioritized.

Trump tweet suggests he thinks attacking Black people makes America great
Hardly an ungrateful fool, LaVar Ball has millions of reasons to thank President Donald Trump for his Twitter barbs. Since the feud, Ball has been the subject of jokes on NBC's famed comedy show "Saturday Night Live".

Uber's recent settlement with the FTC stemmed from allegations that the company failed to honor its promise to monitor employees' ability to access consumers' geolocation data, and also failed to provide reasonable security for its drivers' and users' sensitive data - including names, driver's license numbers, bank account details and Social Security numbers - resulting in a 2014 data breach that affected more than 100,000 drivers.

This week, chief security officer Joe Sullivan, hired in 2015, was sacked once Khosrowshahi learned of the payment to hackers. During the time of the attack, Uber was in the middle of negotiations with US regulators who were investigating separate claims of privacy violations.

Downing Street said the hack, which affected 57m customers and drivers worldwide, had not been reported by the taxi-hailing firm. Instead, they chose to pay the hackers in order to delete the data and remain silent about the attack.

Bali volcano spews smoke for second time in a week
Bali is a major tourist hub and its airport is operating normally, but some airlines have made a decision to cancel their flights. Indonesia lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates crash, which causes frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

In a statement on Wednesday, Uber announced that they had previously discussed the data breach with SoftBank saying, "We informed SoftBank that we were investigating a data breach, consistent with our duty to disclose to a potential investor, even though our information at the time was preliminary and incomplete". We are changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to earn the trust of our customers.

Ironically, if the hackers behind the breach are Russian, Uber customers based within Russia are unlikely to be affected by the global data breach, The Bell outlet writes.

Uber drivers can find out if their data was stolen on this link.

The Times said Russian cyber-criminals are suspected of being behind the breach. No credit card numbers were collected, Uber said.
