London police say have stood down after Oxford Street incident

LONDON (AP) - British police said Friday they were responding to reports of an incident at Oxford Circus subway station, one of London's busiest.

The police said they received "a number of reports" of shots being fired on Oxford Street and underground at Oxford Circus tube station around 16:30 hours (local time), prompting them to urge people to avoid the area until further directions and those already there to seek cover in buildings. "Avoid area if possible".

Scotland Yard said police responded "as if the incident is terrorist related".
