Women of 'SNL' sign statement supporting Al Franken

Despite Weekend Update's unflinching treatment of Saturday Night Live alum Al Franken over the weekend, the embattled Democratic senator from Minnesota is facing additional allegations of sexual misconduct.

The letter's authors acknowledged that what Franken did to Tweeden was "stupid and foolish" and that he should apologize to her and the public, and then went on to defend him citing their own positive experiences with him. Franken was a writer and occasional performer on the series from 1975 to 1980 and again from 1985 to 1995.

Thirty-six women signed the SNL statement supporting the Democrat, including performers Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman, and many behind-the-scenes staff. Other signatures include writers, producers, and assistants from both of Franken's periods at the show.

Though the letter was never ultimately sent after White House counsel Don McGahn strongly advised against it, Trump fired Comey days later.

In a letter obtained by NBC News, the former staffers say they felt "compelled to stand up for Al Franken, whom we have all had the pleasure of working with over the years on Saturday Night Live". It was shameful when Fox News hosts did this for Roger Ailes and this letter, at this time, is highly inappropriate. Franken, who Tweeden also accused of forcibly kissing her, apologized to the former model after a photo of the groping emerged last week.

In a statement to CNN, Franken said he doesn't remember the incident, but added, "I feel badly that Ms. Menz came away from our interaction feeling disrespected".

The apology wasn't enough for progressive advocacy groups, two of which called Monday for Franken to resign.
