U.S. attacks militants in Somalia, Libya

The U.S. military says it killed more than 100 militants in an airstrike on an extremist group's camp in Somalia.

Military officials told VOA that Tuesday's strike hit an al-Shabab training camp in the country's Bay region, about 200 kilometers northwest of the capital, Mogadishu.

That is the largest number of reported deaths from a single US airstrike in Somalia since the Trump administration approved expanded military operations against al-Shabab, which is allied with al-Qaida.

Several weeks ago the Pentagon confirmed that U.S. air strikes had killed 40 Al Shabaab members in a number of assaults carried out over several days as part of a policy to step up operations against the group.
