Legionnaires' disease linked to Las Vegas hotel

Legionnaires' disease linked to Las Vegas hotel

Southern California health officials investigating the source of a Legionnaires' disease outbreak are looking beyond Disneyland, where two cooling towers were recently disinfected after high levels of the bacteria were found.

The outbreak has been linked to Disneyland, causing the park to voluntarily shut off two cooling towers near the New Orleans Square Train Station on October 27.

The disease is a lung infection caused by Legionella bacteria which grows in water and eventually becomes airborne.

The ages of those affected range from 52 to 94.

Eleven out of the 15 cases involve people who visited Disneyland in September including one who worked there.

Orange County health officials confirmed Wednesday three additional cases of Legionnaire's disease in the Anaheim area this year.

That's a normal timeline for a Legionnaires' outbreak investigation, health experts say.

Symptoms generally develop within 2 to 10 days of exposure and include fever, chills, muscle aches, and headaches.

Two people, who had other health-related issues, died after getting infected, but they had not visited Disneyland, said Julie MacDonald of the OC Health Care Agency.

The infection is not spread person to person and those with the disease are not considered infectious. "Negative results mean that the towers do not pose a current ongoing risk for transmission of Legionella", Good said, adding that the agency is working with Disney on procedures to bring the towers back into operation.

There have been a total of 15 cases reported following visits to the theme park.

Legionella is a bacteria that grows naturally in lakes and streams.

Three more cases of Legionnaires' disease have been confirmed in Orange County a week after Disneyland shut down cooling towers due to the disease.
