Majority of Utah's hate crime is race-related, Federal Bureau of Investigation says

The FBI's report was consistent with a report released earlier this year by a civil rights group that found an apparent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate groups this past year.

Excluding a handful of "multiple bias" incidents, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said 57.5 percent of all incidents previous year were based on hate related to race, ethnicity or ancestry.

While the data provides a way to compare annual hate crime statistics, the number of actual hate crime incidents is believed to drastically under reported, according to advocacy groups.

More than half the 4,229 racially motivated crimes were against black people, while 20 percent were against whites, the report shows.

The John Lewis Ad Has Arrived
But staying awake through the night starts to take its toll on Joe, who can hardly keep his eyes open during the day. As do director Michel Gondry and Elbow's Guy Garvey, with a stirring version of Paul McCartney's Golden Slumbers .

Furthermore, there were another 7,321 related offenses stemming from bias against race, religion, sexual orientation, and other traits.

The FBI did not give a reason for a rise in reported hate crimes.

The FBI gathered their information from 15,254 law enforcement agencies. "Police departments that do not report credible data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation risk sending the message that this is not a priority issue for them, which may threaten community trust in their ability and readiness to address hate violence".

The yearly report is the most comprehensive accounting of hate crimes in the U.S. But authorities have long warned it is incomplete, in part because it is based on voluntary reporting by police agencies across the country.

Crimes motivated by a religious bias were the second-most reported type of hate crime.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also doubled down on the importance of addressing hate crimes. Incidents targeting Muslims rose 19 percent from 257 to 307 incidents.

Of the 6,121 criminal incidents reported, 6,063 were single-bias incidents (there were also 58 multiple-bias incidents).
