Arthur Blank releases statement on Roger Goodell extension talks

Goodell filed his last counterproposal around mid-August and requested $49.5million in pay - up from around $30million now - it has been reported.

ESPN, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, reported Goodell also is looking for lifetime health insurance for his family.

The six-member committee consists of Blank, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, New York Giants co-owner John Mara, and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II.

Jones has pushed back against the National Football League possibly extending Goodell's contract, even hiring lawyer David Boies and threatening a potential lawsuit if the transaction goes through.

Goodell, whose proposed contract with the NFL now is undergoing an approval process, asked the league's compensation committee in August to raise his salary from $30 million to $49.5 million per year, ESPN reported Sunday.

According to the ESPN report, Jones said that the league is in a state of "upheaval" under an "avalanche of issues that have beleaguered the NFL unlike any other time in recent memory".

Jones would later acknowledge that he didn't speak to Blank, adding that it wasn't unprecedented for owners avoid pregame conversations.

ESPN reported Sunday morning that the committee, which consists of six owners, will speak on a conference call Monday, less than a week after reports that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has informed members of the group that he planned to block the extension with a lawsuit.

The negotiations with Goodell has become controversial with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly threatened to sue if the league goes forward with the deal. We're not against Roger (Goodell), we just don't know if this is the time to be talking about major contract extensions when the league certainly has several challenges in terms of where we are as a league.

Some fans have said protests are disrespectful to the American flag and to the military, and have boycotted the NFL.

"I really fervently disagree that we shouldn't have him on the playing field", Jones said.
