Trump gets Philippines president Duterte to sing on stage

"Trump is the CEO of the imperialist government of the USA, said 18-year-old student Alexis Danday after the protesters were scattered".

The P15.5-billion budget for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders' Summit should have been given to starving and dying Filipinos across the country, the progressive solon said.

A series of protests against Trump took place this week prior to the United States president's arrival today to meet Southeast Asian leaders and attend the Asean Summit in the final leg of his five-country Asia trip. Both Trump and Xi were following on from the latest APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit that concluded Saturday in the coastal city of Danang, 470 miles (750 kilometers) south of Hanoi.

"If I can help mediate or arbitrate, please let me know..."

TPP countries agree to move ahead with trade pact without US
The TPP aims to eliminate tariffs on industrial and farm products across a bloc whose trade totaled $356 billion previous year . Chinese President Xi Jinping used the same forum to stress multilateralism and said globalisation was an irreversible trend.

Ahead of the next regional meetings, the ASEAN summit in Manila, Chinese state media reported that Xi pledged to work with China's ASEAN partners "to maintain peace and stability, as well as development and prosperity". Trump has previously praised Duterte's handling of his nation's drug problems.

Duterte also said he "might" raise the issue of the South China Sea dispute with Trump, alongside trade, Islamic extremism and terrorism, according to a statement.

The Philippines will be Trump's last stop on a marathon tour that has taken him to Japan, South Korea, China as well as Vietnam.

The territorial tensions in the South China Sea center on Beijing claiming virtually all of the sea to be its territorial waters, claims that have been vigorously disputed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

While Duterte's relationship with the US was strained under the Obama administration, ties have improved since Trump took office earlier this year.

"While the South Korean people are opposing war threats against the north and demanding peace in the region, here is the president of the Philippines who could not even commit to peace in his own country, allowing the country as a launching pad of United States aggression and putting the Filipino population to the danger of nuclear obliteration", he said in a statement. The South China Sea will likely be a hot topic throughout the summit, as most claimants will be attending.

Dotted with small islands, reefs and shoals, the South China Sea is a crucial shipping route and home a messy territorial dispute that pits multiple countries against one another.

India has been supporting freedom of navigation and access to resources in the South China Sea in accordance with principles of global law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
