TSA failing weapons tests by Homeland Security

McCaul said he was briefed before the committee's open hearing by the Department of Homeland Security inspector general and administrator.

The Transportation Security Administration fails an overwhelming amount of undercover tests, with screening checkpoints unable to stop potentially deadly materials from making it onto planes around 80 percent of the time.

Lawmakers and the TSA reportedly support replacing old scanners with CT equipment, which takes 3-D images and can make detection easier.

During a recent probe at USA airports by the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration screeners failed to detect test weapons more than half of the time, according to ABC News.

Twitter users questioned whether airports should still use TSA and lamented the security process. But at least airport security is improving, slightly.

While the TSA catches scores of people with weapons - notably former Trump White House adviser Sebastian Gorka previous year at Reagan National Airport - the inspector general's report in 2015 said that operatives from the office penetrated airport security in about 95 percent of their attempts.

The DHS did not publicly release the rate at which the TSA failed, but one insider told ABC News that an 80-percent failure rate was "in the ballpark".

Just two years ago, testing found a 95 percent failure rate.

"We are focused on staying ahead of a dynamic threat to aviation with continued investment in the workforce, enhanced procedures, and new technologies", Pekoske said.

"This agency that you run is broken badly, and it needs your attention", Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) told TSA Administrator David Pekoske, who was confirmed to lead the federal agency this summer.

After a classified briefing to the House Committee on Homeland Security, several members of Congress admonished the failures of the TSA as "disturbing".

The TSA said it was upgrading scanners with new technology, while DHS provided eight recommendations for improving security processes.

She remembers going inside and him giving her alcohol on this visit or the next, and that at some point she told him she was 14. Corfman's mother, Nancy Wells, 71, says her daughter told her of the encounters more than a decade later.

Frank Cilluffo, former director of the Homeland Security advisory council, told CBS News that as long as terrorism is a threat at airports, "the TSA can not be complacent".
