Facebook asks users to send nude pictures

Facebook wants to pre-emptively prevent revenge porn on its platform by gathering nude images and videos of its users, raising privacy concerns among its 2 billion users.

As Facebook tests the new strategy out in various countries, some state laws in the United States are making sharing non-consensual explicit images a federal crime, like child porn.

Users concerned about intimate images of themselves ending up on Facebook are being invited to send the photos to themselves using Facebook's Messenger app.

Here's how it works: if someone is anxious they might become the victim of revenge porn, they can get in touch with the e-Safety Commissioner.

Jameis Winston (shoulder) to miss next few weeks
The men in Black and Gold are entering a critical four-game stretch where every team they face has a shot at the playoffs. Tampa Bay was held to 200 yards, with starting quarterback Jameis Winston reduced to a taunting child from the sideline.

If there is a photo or video out there you are anxious will be shared without your consent, Australians can contact the e-Safety commissioner. Back in April, Facebook launched a photo-matching technology system that meant if a post was tagged as revenge porn or reported, it could no longer be shared on the platform. "So if somebody tried to upload that same image, which would have the same digital footprint or hash value, it will be prevented from being uploaded", she explained.

The company believes the best way to combat revenge porn could be to post intimate pictures of yourself online before anyone else manages to.

This nude photo inoculation program is now being tested in Australia, with the support and blessing of Australian e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.

Here in Ireland, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald publicised the Government's intentions to criminalise revenge porn in May of this year.

Lidl boosts wages above its grocery rivals
Sadiq Khan added: "Paying the London Living Wage is not only the action of a responsible organisation, but a successful one too". As a result, London now accounts for nearly 42 per cent of businesses paying the Living Wage in the United Kingdom.

Facebook employees will only see a blurred version of the image, then they'll apply the "hash" to it before it is deleted. You send the nude to yourself in Messenger, and Facebook creates a hashed digital fingerprint of the photo - an encrypted version of the raw data in the image file.

Australia's e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Facebook will not permanently store the image.

In Australia, Facebook's customer support team has been reviewing blurred versions of the image in order to determine whether or not it is explicit.

It's not clear if the USA will get the same technology being tested in Australia.

It doesn't appear that Gibson is heeding the Smiths' advice and staying off social media. "! feel you....! feel you...." Yahoo Lifestyle reached out to reps for the Smiths for comment but received no response.

From that point, any attempts to upload or share the same image will be blocked, the Guardian reports. Once that's done, every photo like that one will be unable to be uploaded to Facebook.
