House panel to publicly release Russia Facebook ads

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg says she wished Facebook had sooner discovered that Russians had bought ad campaigns on the site with the intention of influencing the USA site.

Officials from Facebook and the committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Representatives from Facebook, Google and Twitter are expected to testify about Russian influence at hearings before the Senate and House intelligence committees on November 1.

Facebook and other major internet companies including Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) and Twitter (TWTR.N) are on the defensive as they try to limit fallout from a torrent of revelations about how Moscow sought to use their platforms to sow discord in the United States and influence the election.

In early September, Facebook's chief security officer said the company had found approximately $100,000 in advertising spending between June 2015 and May 2017 associated with roughly 3,000 ads that were connected to about 470 "inauthentic accounts and pages".

Still, Sandberg said it was important to protect "free expression" on Facebook.

Conaway, R-Texas, and the top Democrat on the panel, California Rep. Adam Schiff, met with Sandberg in the office of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

Asked by interviewer Mike Allen on Thursday whether Facebook should be regulated as a media company, Sandberg responded: "We're very different than a media company".

Schiff said Sandberg wanted to convey that the company is serious about the issue to members of Congress, some of whom have expressed concerns that the company was reluctant to share information and ensure that foreign governments don't wage information campaigns in US elections. "But what we really owe the American people is determination to do a better job of preventing foreign meddling", she said.

"We don't want this kind of foreign interference" on Facebook, Sandberg added. Facebook has also declined to make the ads public.

"What he is going through is what every person should be afraid of so that they don't do it", she said.

Both men said that in the end, voters need to be more aware of the type of information they are seeking out.

Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) have formed a coalition to press Facebook for action on racial issues, a congressional aide with knowledge of the discussions tells The Hill. Facebook has shared its data about the ads with the special counsel.

"In that ad, there are a lot of things that people don't like, that I don't like".

"It is my belief that Facebook can not be the Trojan Horse through which America's vulnerabilities are exploited", Kelly wrote. On Wednesday, she met privately with the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee's Russian Federation investigation.
