Hack-weary Equifax yanks a web page that was reportedly delivering malware

Equifax Canada says its US parent company's website has temporarily taken down one of its customer services pages amid reports that another part of its website had been hacked.

Equifax's stock plunged at the news of the latest breach, a Wall Street Journal reporter noted on Twitter. Equifax Canada said at the time it was working closely with its parent company Equifax Inc. and an unnamed, independent cybersecurity firm conducting the ongoing investigation.

"We are aware of the situation identified on the equifax.com website in the credit report assistance link", spokesman Wyatt Jefferies wrote.

The breach led to the retirement of Equifax chief executive Richard Smith, who has remained as a consultant to the company during the investigation.

On Thursday, Ars Technica reported that security analyst Randy Abrams was prompted to download fraudulent Adobe Flash updates when he visited the Equifax website to contest his credit report.

Malware-infested links are a common form of online attack, yet they are rarely found on the websites of companies like Equifax.

In what could be yet another incident of hacking, Equifax has taken down a web page because of suspicion that it had been manipulated.
