Raging wine country wildfires burn homes; force evacuations

Wildfires whipped by powerful winds swept through Northern California early Monday, sending residents on a headlong flight to safety through smoke and flames as homes burned.

Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann said more than 50 structures had been destroyed, but there were no reports of injuries or deaths.

Firefighters were battling a 200-acre (80.9-hectare) wildfire in Napa County, an area almost 70 miles north of San Francisco that is known for its vineyards, since late Sunday evening, according to the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The smaller Nuns Fire, in Sonoma, was at 5,000 acres by about midday, officials said. Santa Rosa's historic round barn, at the gateway to Fountaingrove, was also burned, as was the Journey's End mobile home park to the north of Kaiser Permanente's hospital in Santa Rosa and multiple homes along Hopper Lane.
