Eleven injured in auto crash near London museum; terrorism ruled out

A vehicle mounted a sidewalk outside London's Natural History Museum yesterday, injuring several pedestrians in an incident which British police have not ruled out as terrorism.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted: "Very concerning reports from outside the Natural History Museum". The location was cordoned off Saturday by heavily armed police, the video published on social media shows.

One person was arrested after the road traffic collision outside the museum, Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying.

"It is believed that a number of pedestrians have been injured".

Nine of the 11 injured people were taken to hospital, but it is understood that no one has suffered serious injuries. The injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

The report also suggested that Syrian government troops, backed by Russian warplanes, are now near the al-Mayadeen Market and Grain Silos.

The crash happened at 220pm (13:20 GMT) on a day when the west London museum is usually teeming with pedestrians, including worldwide tourists. "Inquiries to establish the circumstances and motive are under way", police said.

"The man arrested remains in custody for questioning".

The museum is in the busy South Kensington section of London, popular with both Londoners and tourists.

A local worker said he saw two cars collide, with two men exiting one auto and removing a man from the other vehicle before pushing him on the ground.

"We sent multiple resources to the scene, including our hazardous area response team, ambulance crews, paramedics in fast-response cars, and incident response officers", McKenna added.

El Bahnasawy was arrested in May 2016, Haroon in September 2016 and Salic in April of this year, according to court documents. The men also allegedly made plans to carry out mass shootings at concert venues.

The head of the Met's anti-terrorism squad, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, is involved in investigating the incident.

A witness said a nearby Tube station was closed.

The incident comes as the terror threat level in Britain is at "severe", its second-highest level, meaning that an attack is likely.

In the month of March, Khalid Masood killed four people and left more than 50 injured in a similar fashion at Westminster Bridge.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister was being kept up-to-date on developments.
