Nobel Prize for Peace awarded to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

The announcement was made on Friday from Oslo, Norway by the president of the Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee denied that giving the prize to an anti-nuclear group was intended either as a rebuke to Trump, or as a snub to the architects of the Iran nuclear deal.

She noted that similar prohibitions have been reached on chemical and biological weapons, land mines and cluster munitions, but despite being "even more destructive" nuclear weapons have avoided a similar worldwide ban.

The awarding of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) represents a timely recognition of the urgency of ridding the world of horrific weapons of mass destruction, according to Irish CND.

"Our colleague in Geneva wasn't sure if it was a genuine call or not", said Mr Wright from his office at Victorian Trades Hall on Saturday. "We have to take that value away in order to pull down numbers to zero".

Through ICAN's work, she said, the campaign has "helped fill the legal gap".

Ten minutes later, the announcement came through on the webcast.

No. 7 Michigan seeks revenge against rival Michigan State
MI has the last victory with a 32-23 win in 2016, but the history of this rivalry has proven that anything can happen on game day. Against Purdue, quarterback John O'Korn took over for the injured Wilton Speight , who is out indefinitely.

It also represented a moment of vindication for the members of the winning organization, known by its acronym ICAN, and for the United Nations diplomats who were responsible for completing the treaty negotiations.

Founded in Vienna in 2007 on the fringes of an global conference on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, ICAN has tirelessly mobilised campaigners and celebrities alike in its cause.

She said ICAN's work "represented efforts by civil society activists who approached governments around the world and maintained the momentum of the negotiations to keep them going".

ICAN founder Tilman Ruff AM said everyone should be concerned about the United States and North Korea's access to nuclear power. The message is clear: there can be no moral or legal justification for threatening whole populations with devastating and indiscriminate nuclear weapons.

The group is funded by private donors and runs on a shoe-string budget (the Asia-Pacific arm's annual budget is $160,000).

Michael Douglas with ICAN Executive Director Beatrice Fihn in 2016. That effort culminated in July with United Nations approval of a new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. "His views had a profound intellectual impact on me", Lown told People in 1985. The Iran accord, which Trump has repeatedly called "the worst deal ever negotiated", is seen as under particular threat this week.

Beatrice Fihn said ICAN founders were also inspired to establish the group following the success of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which won the Nobel Prize in 1997.

However, Vettel failed to set a timed lap in second session due to heavy rain showers all-but making the afternoon a wash-out. With five races remaining, Hamilton leads Vettel by 34 points in the driver championship.

We are going to show the way by negotiating this treaty. The committee may have been reluctant to reward the Iranian government for its role in the nuclear deal because the only Iranian victor so far, 2003 laureate Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer and human rights campaigner, is forced to live in exile.

Associate Professor Ruff said the current political climate bore similarities to the Cold War, when tensions prompted him in the mid-1980s to buy a share in a farm in Lima East in Melbourne's north-east to escape to in the event of nuclear war.

The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has defied United Nations sanctions prohibiting his isolated country's repeated nuclear weapons and missile testing, and he has threatened to strike the USA heartland with the "nuclear sword of justice".

The Nobel committee does not release names of those it considers for the prize, but said 215 individuals and 103 organisations were nominated for this year. His grandfather, Jacob Beser, was the only man in the world to fly on both planes that dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.

"The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a huge accomplishment and a very strong signal to the nuclear-armed states that the status quo was not acceptable".

The reliance on nuclear weapons is controversial in Germany, however, and it was a key campaign issue in the lead-up to last month's election there.
