Hundreds of thousands of passengers across Europe risked being stranded after Monarch Airlines, which has three routes from Stockholm to the United Kingdom, went into administration.

The government and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are securing more than 30 planes, flying to more than 30 airports, to bring home all the Monarch customers.

CAA chief executive Andrew Haines said: "We know that Monarch's decision to stop trading will be very distressing for all of its customers and employees".

Monarch Airlines confirmed it has ceased trading following failed negotiations with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
