Ryanair responds to aviation authority requirements

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, said: "Our job is to protect passengers' rights and ensure that all airlines operating in the United Kingdom are fully compliant with important consumer laws".

The airline was told to divulge "accurate and comprehensive information" to its customers regarding their rights and options and was told it had to offer them the option of a refund or re-routing, including one with an external carrier, as well as supplying information on how they could submit claims for expenses.

They must also state that they intend to reimburse all affected passengers.

The Irish low-priced airline will finalize 25 of their 400 aircraft between November and March 25 to eliminate the "possibility" of being forced to "cancel more flights" in the future.

"I'd absolutely expect the airlines to do that and if they don't do that I'd expect the Commission for Aviation Regulation to make sure they do", he said.

In addition, the Dublin-based carrier must commit to helping passengers who chose an unsuitable option as a result of being misled.

The airline has until 5pm to sort out compensation for thousands of passengers whos flights have been cancelled.

Passengers have expressed frustration with the airline, with many left out of pocket due to a lack of alternative flights and accommodation bookings they can no longer use.

Analysts have said that while the cancellation troubles have worsened, the airline wasn't renowned for having a stellar reputation among customers before.

If the disrupted flight is their outbound sector, customers will also be offered a full refund of the return sector.
