J&K: Top Hizbul Mujahideen militant Qayoom Najar killed

Soon after the incident, Baramulla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Imtiyaz Hussain told reporters, "Najar was killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid in Lachipora area near the LoC this morning". He carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh.

Najar, also known as Jan Sahib and Ishfaq, was a resident of Mumkak in Sopore, and had joined the militancy in 1999.

Besides, a police dossier said that Najar was involved in a number of militant activities including killings of police personnel, Hurriyat activists, ex-militants and threatening trade and business leaders during 2010 unrest.

A Police spokesman in a statement said the slain terrorist was returning to Kashmir from Pakistan to take command of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen following the "wiping up of Hizbul Mujahideen" from north Kashmir.

Najar started his career as a terrorist with the killing of Hizb commander Abdul Majid Dar in 2003. Najar came to the limelight after the attacks on mobile towers and killings of six civilians in Sopore and its adjacent villages.

The longest surviving militant, Najar joined militancy barely at an age of 16.

Investigating agencies say the relation between Najar and Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Syed Salahudin soared from last September after he demanded more money for running the militant operations in the Valley.

Qayoom until 2015 was affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideeen but he broke away from the outfit and formed his own Lashkar-e-Islam which carried out series of attacks on mobile towers and killed several persons for their alleged links with government forces. According to an intelligence officer, Qayoom changed his appearance by using wigs and impersonation to deceive the security agencies. After his release, he plunged into militancy again in 1995.
