Iraqi Kurds vow to press ahead with independence vote despite pressure

The Turkish parliament on Saturday renewed a bill allowing the military to intervene in Iraq and Syria if faced with national security threats - a move seen as a final warning to Iraqi Kurds to call off their Monday independence referendum.

It comes after Erbil's neigbours nad allies all stepped up their opposition to the referendum, throwing into doubt whether the vote will go ahead on Monday as planned.

Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli said the extension was meant to protect Turkey from "threats", adding that the Kurdish Regional Government's planned vote on Monday was a "threat to national security".

Kurdish flags - a red, white and green tricolour emblazoned with a golden sun - adorn cars and buildings across the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq, and billboards announce: "The time is now - say "yes" to a free Kurdistan!"

A statement issued after the meeting said Turkey reserved its rights originating from worldwide conventions. "Baghdad believed the Kurds were divided and could not complete the referendum".

"PUK opposes holding referendum for now, and accepts a USA alternative plan for negotiations", Mr Talabani, the eldest son of former Iraqi president Jalal Talabani, said in the post, calling for "serious discussions" with Baghdad.

Kurdish leaders have also stressed that a "yes" vote will not trigger an automatic declaration of independence, but rather strengthen their hand in lengthy negotiations on secession with Baghdad. US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the price would be high "for all Iraqis, including Kurds". This followed a week of escalating rhetoric between Kurdish leaders and Baghdad, where the parliament voted to reject the referendum. While the referendum is overwhelmingly supported in Kurdish-majority provinces such as Erbil, Dohuk and Sulimaniyah, mixed areas may soon find themselves facing internal conflict, the religious and ethnic diversity they once celebrated becoming their downfall.

"The U.S approach, however, remains unclear regarding the upcoming referendum".

He said that joint Afghan-U.S. forces were making headway against their opposition, "hitting them hard and hitting them effectively".

Iran and Turkey both fear the impact of the vote on their own restless and sizeable Kurdish populations.

Turkey is ready to mediate between Iraq's central government and the Kurdish regional administration to resolve disputes on constitutional basis and through dialogue, the statement added.

Akar and al-Ghanimi emphasized the importance of cooperation in the fight against PKK and Daesh, the statement said.

The turkologist reminded that irrespective of the referendum outcome and worldwide recognition of the vote results, the Iraqi Kurdistan positions itself as a self-sustainable country with authorities, army and special services. He said Turkey would take diplomatic, political and economic measures according to "developments on the ground".
