United States seeks urgent action on Myanmar violence

By pushing the Rohingya issue to the world, urging OIC nations to stand with the Rohingya, and bringing the crisis to the attention of other world leaders, she has shown that Bangladesh need not wait for countries like China, or India, or the United States to lead the way.

Bangladesh was recently downgraded to a Tier 2 "Watch List" country in the U.S. State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report, reflecting increased concerns about government efforts to combat trafficking.

The Union Home Ministry, in an affidavit on Monday, had told the SC that the influx of the Rohingyas in India began in 2012-13 and it has been noted that some of these illegal immigrants are involved in criminal activities, including illegally obtaining Indian identification documents and fake currency. The two boys, aged nine and ten, waved goodbye to their parents and left for school in their village in Myanmar's Rakhine State.

Van Thio did not use the term Rohingya, referring to them simply as Muslims. Myanmar's government said the crowd grew "aggressive" and threw petrol bombs, and were dispersed by police. "There was a mob of Rakhine people too", said Usman Goni, 55, after he stepped off a boat with his seven children and wife, clutching two sticks tied in rope and a sack.

Eight people were detained and several police were injured before order was restored late at night. No aid workers were hurt, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said. At first, Bangladesh also refused to take them, saying they were Burmese.

The Myanmar military response has sent more than 410,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh, escaping what they and rights monitors say is a campaign aimed at driving out the Muslim population.

The government has blamed the Rohingya, saying they set fire to their own homes, but the United Nations and others accuse it of ethnic cleansing.

A number of activists within and outside Myanmar who spoke with The Daily Beast said their posts about the violence were frequently taken down by Facebook.

The plight of the Rohingya has raised questions about the commitment of government leader Aung San Suu Kyi to human rights. This prompted criticism on Monday from fellow Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai and Muslim countries in Asia targeting Suu Kyi.

He said France will work with other members of the UN Security Council for a condemnation of "this genocide which is unfolding, this ethnic cleansing".

State secretary Tin Maung Swe said Reuters could not visit the area for security reasons, but said the authorities were assessing needs of those living there.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, he said Myanmar was investigating "a problem of significant magnitude".

"People are too invested in the last five years of thawing, which is understood by everyone to be strategically sound", said the official, who declined to be identified.

Myanmar, the majority whose population is Theravada Buddhist, does not welcome this Muslim ethnic group and refused its people citizenship.

The Rohingya are not recognised as a "national race" and Min Aung Hlaing did not refer to their return.

"More than half of the Rohingya women interviewed in early 2017 in a refugee camp in Bangladesh reported experiencing rape or other forms of sexual violence, but due to the acute social stigma, such cases are significantly under-reported", said a statement issued by the Special Representative.

The group Medecins Sans Frontieres said a "massive scale-up of humanitarian aid in Bangladesh is needed to avoid a massive public health disaster".
