As Rohingya Flee Violence, Myanmar's Leader Cancels UN Meeting

An estimated 409,000 Rohingyas have arrived in Bangladesh until September 10, fleeing the military crackdown in Myanmar, says a United Nations report.

The "ebb and flow" between persecutor and persecuted in Myanmar's Rakhine state depends on who is in power, says Sarawak deputy chief minister James Masing.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the violence in Rakhine State that sparked the mass exodus of Rohingya.

He estimated that the Islamic Republic would be sending 150 more tonnes of relief supplies to violence-stricken Rohingya Muslims in the future, and said the Society was prepared to set up as many as 400 relief tents aimed at assisting the displaced.

Under which law, can the Centre send all the Rohingya refugees back?" he added. From Bangladesh, some Rohingyas have crossed into India.

Meanwhile, Zaw Htay, a spokesman for Myanmar's presidential office, said the reason people abandoned their homes was because many were told to leave by family members who were involved in terrorist activities.

Conditions are already worsening in Bangladesh s southeastern border district of Cox s Bazar where the majority of refugees are living in squalid conditions after fleeing Myanmar s violence-wracked Rakhine state.

A spokesman for the presidential office in Myanmar said Wednesday that Suu Kyi had called off her upcoming trip to the 72nd UN General Assembly in NY for two reasons.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali said that Prime Minister Hasina would highlight the root cause behind the longstanding humanitarian crisis and place specific proposals for early solution during her address at the general debate on September 21. "Women and children are arriving hungry and malnourished".

The current crisis erupted on August 25, when an insurgent Rohingya group attacked police outposts in Burma's Rakhine state, killing a dozen security personnel. He said, "The humanitarian situation it is catastrophic".

The violence has put a spotlight on de facto Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her work fighting for democratic rule against the Burmese military.

The violence in Rakhine and the exodus of refugees is the most pressing problem Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced since becoming national leader a year ago. A top United Nations official had earlier said a previous United Nations target of US$77 million (S$104 million) would be inadequate to deal with the crisis.

Top UN officials have previously expressed concerns about possible "ethnic cleansing" perpetrated against the Rohingya.
