A look at the new data on income, poverty, health insurance

According to 2016 American Community Survey data released today, the median household income in the state rose by almost 4 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars to $76,126 past year. It marked the second consecutive year that median household income increased.

The bureau reported 40.6 million people in the United States are considered living in poverty, or 2.5 million fewer than in 2015.

The percentage of Americans with health insurance also dropped in 2016, to 8.8% from 9.1% in 2015.

A last reading was on the gender gap, the difference between what men earn and what women earn. The median income had surged since 2014 because millions more Americans found full-time jobs, but there is little evidence that employers are rushing to offer raises to those who already are employed. This is the first time since the recession that the poverty rate isn't statistically different from the 2007 level of 12.5%, a sign of how the USA economy has recovered from the Great Recession.

Poverty in the state also seemed to be falling.

President Trump to travel to Florida to survey damage from Hurricane Irma
Virgin Islands is also a possibility, and if it does occur, it wouldn't happen until next week at the earliest. This is Trump's third visit in less than three weeks to a hurricane-damaged state.

The annual median income rise breaks down to an extra $150 a month - before taxes. Overall since 2014, total employment rose by 4.6 million, with full-time, year-round employment accounting for the entirety of the net growth in jobs.

Yet that improvement comes after a steep recession and a slow recovery that left most American households with barely any income increases.

The Atlantic provinces and Quebec had the lowest median incomes in the country in 2015, just as in 2005, although there were wide variations in Quebec. Virginia was the only state where poverty rates increased between 2015 and 2016. And yawning racial disparities remain, with the median African American household earning only $39,490, compared with more than $65,000 for whites and over $81,000 for Asians.

The median household income took a serious hit during and after the Great Recession. The 2015 to 2016 percentage change in their real median income was not statistically significant, the report says.

Most economists would argue that Trump hasn't been in the White House long enough to have a measurable impact on the economy, but some question if he will ever be able to implement his agenda.

According to the U.S. Census, the percentage of uninsured in CT has declined significantly over the past several years. But at 22 percent, it still remains low, which may make many of his older supporters wonder if the 71-year-old businessman they helped elect will deliver on his promises.

That's compared with the national uninsured rate, which is now 8.8 percent.

The percentage of uninsured people in CT fell from 9.4 percent in 2013 to 4.9 percent in 2016.

The report also showed that income inequality worsened previous year, extending a trend in place for roughly four decades.

The Liberal government's new child benefit was created to slash child poverty rates further, particularly in places like Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, which had the highest provincial child poverty rate at 22.2 per cent.
