TORNADO spotted in Florida as Hurricane winds felt on land

TORNADO spotted in Florida as Hurricane winds felt on land

By Monday afternoon, more than 800,000 Georgia Power and EMC customers mostly in coastal and south Georgia were without power.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told an AP reporter Sunday morning that he expected his Davis Islands home to flood and was bracing for 5 to 8 feet (1.5 to 2.4 metres) of storm surge. Now, evacuated Floridians are sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic to head home and face monumental cleanups throughout the state.

Is it safe to travel to the Florida Keys?

Irma made landfall just after 9 a.m.at Cudjoe Key, about 20 miles outside Key West, forecasters said.

Before reaching the United States Irma tore through a string of Caribbean islands, going from tiny Barbuda on Wednesday to the tropical paradises of Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin, the USA and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Those are key junctures for travellers looking to return to the southern peninsula.

Visitors and business owners were allowed back to the Upper Keys on Tuesday.

Dozens of eager Keys residents parked their cars along US 1 Monday, staying there through the night to make sure they could get onto the Keys when access was granted, ABC Miami affiliate WPLG-TV reported.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority suspended all bus and rail services on Monday and would decide later whether to resume operations on Tuesday, spokesman Erik Burton said. In the meantime, shelters and distribution centers for food and water are being opened. Alabama Power said 23,000 customers, mostly in the eastern part of the state, were without power due to Irma.

President Trump to travel to Florida to survey damage from Hurricane Irma
Virgin Islands is also a possibility, and if it does occur, it wouldn't happen until next week at the earliest. This is Trump's third visit in less than three weeks to a hurricane-damaged state.

Irma hit southwest Florida on Sunday morning as a risky Category 4 storm, the second-highest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

"I didn't see the damage I thought I would see", said the state's Governor Rick Scott, after flying over the Keys to survey damage.

Further north, Miami Beach residents were permitted to return, too.

Utility officials are warning residents that it could take weeks to get the lights back on in parts of the Southeast.

They added that heavy squalls with embedded tornadoes will be sweeping across south Florida.

Although the brunt of the storm has passed, further evacuations may take place as there is no power or running water in areas. Over 350 people were rescued from the flooding, but no casualties were reported there.

If the water hadn't pushed out, Shiveley said, storm surge could have been in the eight or nine-foot range. In fact, it's the pre-telephone era for most of us. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour (120 kph) with higher gusts.

Instead, the Tampa Bay region was hit with tropical storm-force winds and 4 1/2 inches (10 centimetres) of rain.

Hurricane Jose meandering in the Atlantic
Fox 61 weatherman Matt Scott said: "There are some rumours swirling about Hurricane Jose hitting NY in ten days". But one outlier track shows that Jose could veer off course and hit the US East Coast near NY .

"It's been looping around, and that is when things start to get really tricky", he said. "It psyches you out; it's just the endless hallowing and pounding of the wind".

"It was a very, very stressful trip because every other block had traffic lights out", he said. But the fact that it lost some of its strength before hitting mainland U.S. is a relief for people in Florida. The victim was killed after he lost control of a truck that carried a generator as winds whipped at tropical-storm strength, officials said.

All Florida highways are now open - if vehicle owners can find gas, officials said Tuesday. In March, a couple in MI died of carbon monoxide poisoning while running a generator inside their enclosed garage attached to their house during widespread power outages from a windstorm.

Another person died from carbon monoxide poisoning from improper use of a generator in Miami-Dade County, the mayor said. Georgia had three deaths.

At the Hollywood nursing home, Jean Lindor, a kitchen worker, said through a Haitian Creole translator that the air conditioner had not been working since the storm and it had been hot inside.

A third death was reported in Worth County. Cars are under water in Charleston, South Carolina.

Irma bullied through much of the Caribbean - Antigua, St. Martin, St. Barts, Anguilla, the USA and British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas.
