Trump disbands councils as resignations continue

The chief executives of three major manufacturing firms have resigned from Donald Trump's advisory panel over the President's failure to swiftly condemn deadly white supremacist violence in Charlottesville.

August 16: In the middle of the day, Trump tweeted he was "ending" both groups "rather than putting pressure" on the members. "I am stepping down from the council to focus on inspiring & uniting through power of sport", he said in a statement.

Among those who've left are the chief executives for Merck, Under Armour and Intel and the president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

However, not before Frazier, a leading African-American industry captain, announced he was quitting the President's council on Monday (14 August). "The past few months have provided me with an opportunity to reflect upon my commitment to these values". Trump cited violence "on many sides" after neo-Nazis and white nationalists clashed with counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend.

Soon after Thulin's announcement, Campbell's Soup (CPB.N) CEO Denise Morrison announced her resignation from the council.

"Under Armour engages in innovation and sports, not politics", Plank said.

"I joined the American Manufacturing Council because I believed it was important for Under Armour to have an active seat at the table and represent our industry".

But Intel CEO Brian Krzanich was more specific when he resigned a short time later, writing that while he had urged leaders to condemn "white supremacists and their ilk", many in Washington "seem more concerned with attacking anyone who disagrees with them".

His remarks were a reversal of what he said a day before, when he tweeted that he had plenty of CEOs who wanted to be on the panels to replace those who quit, and called the CEOs who left "grandstanders".

Several CEOs are no longer involved with the council as the result of leaving their respective companies. Three of the nation's top executives resigned from a federal panel created years ago to advise the USA president.

By Monday afternoon the AFL-CIO said it was "assessing" its role in the manufacturing group - which it said "has yet to hold any real meeting".

August 16: Dow Chemical's Liveris, who led the manufacturing group, issued this statement:"Every member of the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative condemns racism and bigotry, and there can not be moral ambiguity around the driving forces of the events in Charlottesville. I hope this will change, and I remain willing to serve when it does". "I will continue to support all efforts to spur economic growth and advocate for the values that have always made American great".
