Following an information about the presence of militants, the forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Avneera village of Zainapora area of the district triggering an encounter.

Speaking to India Blooms, Senior Superintend of Police Shopian Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar said, "Three militants were killed and firing have stopped". There were reports that one of the militants could be a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen. The army is also mulling the possibility of operating two or more teams jointly in a target area.

"They (Irfan and Umar) had joined the terror outfit previous year (after the killing of Burhan Wani) and were involved in many anti-national and unlawful activities, a police spokesman said". In a statement, Hizb Chief Salah-ud-din said that Itoo was killed when he fell from a mountain while being on "operational duties".
