Cracks emerged in the opposition on the last day of the monsoon session as the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) skipped a joint meeting on Friday.

He noted that Finance minister Arun Jaitley had said in Parliament that loan waiver was not the government's policy and a BJP leader had said they did not want to make farmers lazy by doing it. 16 out of 18 parties, which were invited, attended the meeting.

He said that this could be done through effective strategy and taking up of pro-people issues such as the agrarian crisis.

Giving examples of the Congress-ruled states, Gandhi said Congress governments in Karnataka and Punjab have stood by the farmers in their time of need.

The meeting thanked opposition presidential candidate Meira Kumar and vice-presidential candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi for accepting their request to contest despite knowing that the result was likely to be unfavourable. The meeting would deliberate on these matters, he said. Siddaramaiah had implemented a number of projects for Dalits, backward classes and the minorities, he said.

All the 16 parties assured their cooperation beyond the Parliament as they gear up to mount against BJP in the General elections due in 2019.
