Colonel Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the coalition backing the government against Iran-backed Huthi rebels, said it "suffered a technical defect while returning from an operation in Yemen".

"The closure of Sanaa airport and the limitation of flights to exclusively those carrying aid was due to concerns for the safety of civilian travel and commercial flights, as well as the smuggling of weapons by the Huthis", al-Maliki said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

The Yemeni navy has warned the Saudi-led military coalition, which is assisting Riyadh in its war on Yemen, against any adventurism in the Red Sea, efforts to prevent humanitarian convoys from reaching the strategic port city of Hudaydah and attacks on Yemeni fishermen.

Another five injured soldiers were taken to hospital in Mukalla in the neighbouring province of Hadramawt, they said.
