Fossils of Earliest Known Gliding Mammals Found in China

"These are some of the most attractive fossils that I've ever seen", says Zhe-Xi Luo, senior author of the study and a professor at the University of Chicago.

When you think about the Jurassic Period, you probably think of massive, lumbering dinosaurs.

Mammals did not get under the feet of the dinosaurs - they inhabit their own niche, for life.

The smaller of the two, Vilevolodon diplomylos, is three inches long, and its fossil is also preserved with a skin membrane "as if it's a museum-prepared specimen", he adds.

The fossils are described in a pair of papers published this week in Nature by an worldwide team of scientists from the University of Chicago and Beijing Museum of Natural History.

The group also defended the Kim Jong Un regime's development of nuclear weapons, calling the policy a "fair and square" decision. Wang also said the new resolution showed China and the worldwide community's united opposition to North Korea's aggression.

These incredibly well-preserved fossils retained many fine details, including fur-covered membranes that formed a wing-like connection between the front and back legs.

They also show many skeletal features in their shoulder joints and forelimbs that gave the ancient animals the agility to be capable gliders.

An global team of scientists from the University of Chicago and Beijing Museum of Natural History have discovered fossils of two extinct mammals that lived in China some 160 million years ago. They estimated that the animal was alive 125 million years ago.

This distinct diet and lifestyle evolved again some 100 million years later among modern mammals, in examples of convergent evolution and ecology. It's not quite flight, at least not the way that we think of it: Unlike birds, or even bats-another airborne mammal-these early mammals did not have powered flight.

The ability to glide in the air is one of the many remarkable adaptations in mammals.

She appeared to regret her decision when she posted a tearful message on YouTube shortly after she left the house. Trisha said: " Sarah f***ing Harding, little f***ing c***y a** b***h".

But now scientists say there were also gliders - early relatives of mammals, akin to today's flying squirrels - whizzing through the trees. He points to the diverse mammals that now can glide, like North American flying squirrels, African scaly-tailed gliders, southeast Asian colugos, and Australian marsupial sugar gliders. Maiopatagium's teeth resemble those of fruit bats, suggesting it ate soft plant parts. In fact, the discovery suggests that ancient mammals evolved the volant (or flying) way of life roughly 100 million years earlier than the first modern flying mammals.

Gliding from tree to tree may allow more efficient and safe foraging and provide rapid escape from predators.

Their gliding ability would have given them access to food that ground-bound competitors could not reach, said the team. "The groundwork for mammals' successful diversification today appears to have been laid long ago", he said. It's the same reason that some modern-day tree-dwelling mammals evolved the ability to glide, Luo says.

The new species, Maiopatagium furculiferum and Vilevolodon diplomyl, belong to an extinct branch of the mammalian evolutionary tree known as the haramiyidans - creatures though to be the predecessors of the modern mammal, according to BBC News.

"The gliding membranes were attached to the four limbs, likely at or near the wrists and ankles", University of Chicago palaeontologist David Grossnickle said.
