North Korea launches new war-themed games for mobile phones: state media

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.17% and closed at 22,048.70.

Technology companies led a broad slide in USA stocks late Thursday afternoon, giving the stock market its biggest loss in two months.

For the week the S&P fell 1.4 percent and the Dow lost 1.1 percent - their largest weekly drops since the week ending March 24 - and the Nasdaq was off 1.5 percent.

Markets had seen a tentative recovery in risk appetite in USA and early Asian trading, but as the war of words resumed Asian stocks dropped back and London, Frankfurt and Paris all lost 0.5 to 1.2 per cent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite lost 2.1 percent to 6,216.87. Bond and gold prices, traditional havens for nervous investors, were little changed, and the VIX, a measure of how much volatility investors expect in stocks, fell 3.3 percent after a 44.4 percent jump the day before. Traders there were also digesting a rise in jobless claims and the biggest drop in producer prices in 11 months.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude gained 39 cents to $49.95 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 2.1% to 6216.87 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 1.45% to 2438.21.

Trump ratcheted up his rhetoric against North Korea and its leader on Thursday, warning Pyongyang against attacking Guam or U.S. allies after it disclosed plans to fire missiles over Japan to land near the U.S. Pacific territory. Sterling was sitting at 1.287 against the American currency, while the euro was at 1.17 during Friday trading, as relations between Kim Jong-un's rogue state and the U.S. president continued to deteriorate. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) gave up 71 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $12.12.

In commodities, USA crude fell 0.67 percent to $49.23 per barrel and Brent was last at $52.58, down 0.23 percent on the day.

Gold rose 0.6 percent to $1,268 an ounce. South Korea's KOSPI was down 1.7 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng 1.8 percent.

S&P 500 e-minis were down 4.5 points, or 0.18 percent, with 209,543 contracts traded.

"The drop in PPI signals potential weakness in CPI, but even if consumer prices tick higher like economist [s] anticipate, it won't be enough because the Federal Reserve doesn't feel good about inflation", BK Asset Management Managing Director Kathy Lien said in a note.

"The war of words taking place between the United States and North Korea at the moment, which includes very real threats of action, is taking its toll on investor sentiment".

The local currency was trading at 1,145.05 won against the USA dollar, down 3.05 won from the previous session's close.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude gained 39 cents to $49.95 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.4 percent to 3,261.75. Australia was off 1.2 percent.
