A house-sized asteroid will zoom past the Earth in October

The asteroid is forecast to speed inside the moon's orbit at 27,300 miles (43,935km) - an eighth of the distance between the Earth and the moon.

An asteroid set to whizz past Earth in October will miss our planet by 44,000 kilometers, according to new observations which spotted the wandering space rock for the first time in five years.

This is just far enough away to miss satellites which orbit at about 22,000 miles above Earth.

The asteroid completes an orbit around the sun every 609 days.

I will try to fight, I will get this number. "I am still motivated to break that record". Van Niekerk certainly wasn't affected by the bug.

"We are certain that there is no risk that the object touches the Ground, so there is no danger of any kind", said to AFP Detlef Koschny, co-director of the segment Objects neos (Near-Earth Objects) of the ESA.

"It's damn close", Rolf Densing, head of Germany's European Space Operations Center, told AFP.

Now, the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile has managed to track down the rock and determine its distance. "The farthest satellites are 36,000 kilometres out, so this is indeed a close miss".

NASA scientists have previously tested their monitoring and emergency response coordination systems using hypothetical impact scenarios, but the October flyby offers researchers a chance to track and predict the size and trajectory of the previously detected near-Earth object in real time.

Four years ago, a meteoroid of about 20 metres exploded in the atmosphere over the city of Chelyabinsk in central Russian Federation with the kinetic energy of about 30 Hiroshima atom bombs.

Year asteroid of that size entering our atmosphere would have an effect similar to that of Chelyabinsk (a meteorite of 18 meters in diameter that no one had seen it coming and that blew up in February 2013 to 23,000 feet above Chelyabinsk, Russia, with a power equivalent to 30 atomic bombs).

About 1,500 people were injured seriously enough to seek medical treatment, mainly by broken glass from windows that were blown in when the shock wave arrived.
