Playing violent video games may be bad for the brain

This is the caudate nucleus which acts as a counterbalance to the hippocampus. More grey matter in the hippocampus means a healthier brain, all round.

It turns out that there's a turf war raging between two parts of your brain: the hippocampus on one side of the battle and something called the caudate nucleus on the other.

And the more depleted the hippocampus becomes, the more a person is at risk of developing brain illnesses and diseases ranging from depression to schizophrenia, PTSD and Alzheimer's disease.

Lead scientist Dr. Greg West, from the University of Montreal in Canada, noted that these findings go against previous claims that video games benefit particular cognitive systems in the brain.

Apparently, when asked about his rumored engagement to the singer, Robert doesn't exactly admit their status. The insider said: " Katy is very good friends with Rob, but you never know what will happen in the future".

Researchers found that 85% of gamers rely on their caudate nucleus (also known as "response learners") more than their hippocampus (spatial learners) while navigating action video games.

Action games such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto have been found to deplete a key memory centre in the brain called the hippocampus.

"There's evidence that stimulation of the caudate nucleus can directly inhibit the hippocampus, especially under stress", said West, explaining that the caudate nucleus has evolved to work efficiently under pressure, even the self-inflicted stress of a video game. That's why we made a decision to do a full neuro-imaging study, scanning the brains of habitual players and comparing them to non-players, and what we saw was less grey matter in the hippocampus of habitual players. Some experts believe these adverse effects have been overstated, but a new study from the Université de Montréal has found habitually playing them may actually harm your brain. Indeed, the "results suggest that improvement in such cognitive skills may come at a cost".

Regular players lose grey matter from this region, which could put them at greater risk of Alzheimer's disease, depression and schizophrenia.

Kendall Jenner accused of not tipping bartender in viral Instagram post
Some have blasted the star while others have jumped to her defense, slating the establishment for sharing her signature. Kendall took to Twitter on Monday (August 7) to clear up the story and let everyone know that she left a tip in cash.

The test was carried out across 100 people using Call of Duty, Killzone and Borderlands 2 as the "action video games" and a few 3D platformers from the Super Mario series as a non-action standard.

To establish which participants were spatial learners (that is, those who favoured their hippocampus) versus "response learners" (those using the reward system), West and his team first had each of them run through a "4-on-8" virtual maze on their computer. Playing action video games has the potential to inhibit activity in the hippocampus, but only in response learners. The same amount of screen time on each produced very different effects on the brain. The Super Mario games, on the other hand, led to an increase of grey matter in the hippocampus for all participants.

It might be possible for players to reverse the damage by choosing games that challenge them to explore without help from pathfinder systems, the study shows.
