A Partial Lunar Eclipse Will Be Visible Tonight in China

Purdue's Astronomy Club will host an event for the solar eclipse on August 21 - in two weeks.

A partial lunar eclipse will take place tonight and will be visible from across the country.

The 70-mile-wide path of totality spans from OR to SC, so for people viewing the celestial event in Washington, you will need to wear special-purpose solar filters like eclipse glasses OR hand-held solar viewers the entire time.

Tillerson: US weighing response to Russia's expulsion of diplomats
Russian Federation will also seize U.S. diplomatic compounds, as a further indication of their anger towards the new sanctions . Secretary Tillerson praised the agreement between the United Nations envoys Sunday, calling it a "good outcome".

The August 7 lunar eclipse is associated with the upcoming major August 21 solar eclipse. The eclipse will provide a unique opportunity to study the sun, Earth, moon and their interaction because of the eclipse's long path over land coast to coast. The partial eclipse will end at 12:48 am, while the penumbral eclipse will end at 2:20 am on August 8. A narrow swath from Texas to ME will see a total solar eclipse.

If you were on that same satellite during a total solar eclipse, you'd also see the moon's shadow move across the Earth's surface, but in the opposite direction. The last time the contiguous US saw a total eclipse was in 1979. Not to scale: If drawn to scale, the Moon would be 30 Earth diameters away.

For those lucky enough to live in Southern Illinois, they'll see not just the 2017 solar eclipse in totality, they'll also see the 2024 solar eclipse in totality. The path of totality is a relatively thin ribbon, around 70 miles wide, that will cross the USA from West to East.
