Facebook News Feed To Now Rank Faster Loading Web Pages Higher

Facebook announced Wednesday it will lower the ranking of a web page appearing in News Feed if Facebook's technology detects it will load slowly.

Facebook is going to roll out this change gradually over the next few months.

Dear media companies and other publishers, Facebook is not here for your slow-loading web pages. If the signals indicate to Facebook that the webpage loads quickly, that webpage may be shown higher in the News Feed. And to help load stories faster for people on slow or poor network connections, we prefetch stories by downloading mobile content before someone clicks a link, which we've seen can shorten load time for webpages by more than 25%.

TechCrunch pointed out that publishers using Facebook's Instant Articles format will definitely not see a decrease, as the format strips bulky code and restricts ads for a faster load experience.

Facebook regularly tweaks every part of its experience to encourage more users to stick around, but the social media network's latest update could have some websites and publishers anxious. It will also begin tests of a paid subscription paywall feature in the fall.

What is quite interesting is that Facebook has not mentioned their Instant Articles even once in the whole post. Now, the company is taking a page out of Google's book: Facebook is updating its News Feed algorithm to show more stories that load quickly on mobile and fewer stories that might take longer to load. Facebook also recommends the following five tools for site owners looking to improve their mobile user experience: Page Speed, Yslow, WebPageTest, PageSpeed Insights, and Dotcom-monitor. It anticipates that most Pages won't see any significant changes to their reach in News Feed. The company states in their Newsroom post that they will consider factors such as the internet speed and the general speed of the webpage. For instance, in the past it changed the News Feed to display fewer videos when a user's network connection speeds was slow. In the post, the pair wrote that frustrated users had complained of clicking on links to be directed to slow-loading pages.

I don't know what Colbert is going to do with his new Scaramucci cartoon, but I'm sure he'll find a use for it. Colbert said . "His going away party can serve what's left of his welcome cake.

"When sites take a long time to load, people will abandon it", Greg Marra, a product manager at Facebook told CNN Tech.

The company also "prefetches" stories, which means it downloads mobile content before some clicks a link. Even with Facebook's reassurances, the change will still alarm some publishers.

When the updated News Feed algorithm is rolled out, Facebook warns that web pages that are "particularly slow" will likely see decreases in traffic.
