UAE Behind Qatar Hacks

UAE Behind Qatar Hacks

A new report by the Washington Post, citing USA intelligence, says there is evidence that the United Arab Emirates coordinated the hacking of Qatar's state media agency (QNA), which led to the blockade of the Gulf monarchy.

The United Arab Emirates has denied it was behind the alleged hacking of Qatar's state news agency in May.

Gargash said the memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Qatar on Tuesday on the financing of terrorism was a positive development.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash told the BBC on Monday the Post's report was "untrue".

Officials became aware last week that newly analyzed information gathered by USA intelligence agencies confirmed that on May 23, senior members of the UAE government discussed the plan and its implementation.

Among the false social media posts published during the hack were some made in the name of the Emir of Qatar, in which he appeared to make disparaging remarks about US President Donald Trump, praised Gaza's Hamas leaders and expressed support for Iran as an "Islamic power".

The diplomatic crisis caused by the cyberattack has reportedly brought to the fore a long-drawn out feud between the Gulf monarchies, which last erupted when the UAE and Bahrain accused Qatar of providing a safe haven to their political dissidents and funding terrorists.

According to intelligence officials, the working theory since the attacks was reported has been that the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt or a combination of these countries were involved in orchestrating the hacks.

"We need a regional solution and worldwide monitoring", said Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, in prepared remarks he was scheduled to deliver on Monday in London, Reuters reported.

UAE Ambassador Yousef al Otaiba denied the report in a statement, saying it was "false", the Post said.

The goal of the hacking was to embed false news stories of an incendiary nature that led to the current Gulf crisis. Previously, US media, citing the Federal Bureau of Investigation, blamed the attack on "Russian hackers".

Qatar rejected the demands, insisting that the list was so draconian that it was created to be turned down.

Gargash said the UAE would not escalate its boycott by asking companies to choose between doing business with it or Qatar.
