U.S. to offer 15000 extra temporary worker visas this year

Businesses that take advantage of the H-2b visa program have to attest under oath that they will suffer irreparable harm if they can't get the temporary foreign workers.

Earlier this year Congress voted to allow Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to offer more than the annual limit of 66,000 such visas.

The additional 15,000 visas stack on top of the 33,000 that the Department of Homeland Security has already allotted for the second half of the current fiscal year.

The Trump Organization is among the businesses that use the visas. The businesses are also required to have documents that would prove their need, though they do not have to submit them along with their petition to receive the additional visas. In addition to the increase in visas, the department also announced a new tip line for people to report abuse of the program, according to a press release.

"We do think it fits into the "America First" focus of the administration", said one of them.

The H-2B program allows workers from places like Mexico and Guatemala to come to the USA, work for a few months at a government-set prevailing wage, and then return to their home countries, only to repeat the process the following year. It's a new requirement to access the visas under Trump's "America First" administration.
