Surgeon finds 27 contact lenses in woman's eye

Morjaria says she and her colleagues were startled to find 17 contact lenses clumped together as they were injecting anesthesia into the woman's eye at Solihull Hospital, southeast of Birmingham.

"When we review 2 weeks later, she recognized feel much less discomfort", says Dr. Morjaria, who attributes the loss of these lenses to a more low from the right eye and sunken eyes. The patient had been wearing monthly disposable contact lenses for some 35 years, she said.

She said: "It was such a large mass". The incident should also raise issues for optometrists, she said, noting that the mass of contact lenses hadn't triggered an obvious infection. "We were really surprised that the patient didn't notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there", she said further.

According to the report, the woman's operation has been postponed as the risk of developing "endophthalmitis" - an inflammation of the interior of the eye - increased dramatically. She thought that the discomfort she's being feeling is just a part of old age.

The case took place in November past year but has come to light in the "British Medical Journal" only this week.

No symptoms were reported by the patient before the surgery.

Outside of that one single glob of contact lenses, there were ten other lenses in the woman's eye.

Hundreds of muslims have prayed on the sidewalks outside different gates of the old city, found journalists from AFP. Another Jewish Home MK, Moti Yegev, said the holy site "should be closed to Muslim [worshippers] for a long time".

As related by Optometry Today, the patient was not aware that she had several contact lenses missing at the time she was scheduled to receive cataract surgery.

Morjaria warned that it's important to have regular check-ups for those wearing contact lenses.

This highlights the importance of selecting appropriate patients for the use of contact lenses and monitoring contact lens wearers, it added.
