More than 7 million people vote in Venezuelan referendum — Maduro foes

"We don't want to be Cuba".

Voters strongly opposed government plans for a new constituent assembly with the power to scrap the National Assembly and rewrite the constitution.

"Today, Venezuela stood up with dignity to say freedom does not go backwards, democracy is not negotiated", said Julio Borges, who leads the opposition-controlled legislature after the referendum results were announced."We don't want a fraudulent Constituent Assembly imposed on us". There are 19.5m registered voters in the country. This was a typical step in the constitution of Venezuela.

Maduro has slammed the opposition vote as meaningless and illegitimate.

Violence persists across Venezuela, having caused 115 casualties so far.

Now, opposition leaders are promising "Zero Hour" in Venezuela to demand a general election and stop the leftist Maduro's plan to create a controversial new legislative super-body called a Constituent Assembly in a July 30 vote.

Venezuelans hope the vote brings an end to the violent clashes that have claimed dozens of lives in the past few months.

-In March, the Supreme Court decided it would take over the National Assembly. Over 80 people have been killed in the protests that started late April.

The President's call to amend the constitution has led to widespread protests condemning the move.

The ruling party questioned the results in advance, noting that the process is not binding and is "illegal" because it lacks the endorsement of the National Electoral Council (CNE) - which the opposition accuses of supporting the government.

The rector of the Central University of Venezuela, Cecilia Garcia Arocha, delivered the figures of the participation, which must be submitted to a subsequent audit to rule out any double vote.

Voting on three questions, 98 per cent rejected the new assembly proposed by President Maduro and backed a call for elections before 2019. Do they want the armed forces to back congress?

Mass protests have become a almost daily occurrence in Venezuela since the crisis began in early April, after the Supreme Court, which many see as filled with pro-government judges, dissolved parliament and transferred legislative power to itself.

The opposition plans to burn ballot papers from the informal poll so those who voted against the government can not be identified and victimized.

Venezuelan bishops have warned that President Maduro is seeking to establish a "socialist, Marxist and militaristic" state as tensions continue to rise in the Latin American country.

"They have convened an internal consultation with the opposition parties, with their own mechanisms, without electoral rulebooks, without prior verification, without further verification".

"I was mugged three times in a year, " Monique recounted, and said her husband's house was broken into.

Maduro described the event as the "biggest and most impactful dry run of all dry runs that have taken place in the last 18 years" in a tweet on Sunday.

The opposition wants new elections before Mr Maduro's term expires in early 2019 and say rewriting the constitution would nearly certainly delay this year's regional elections and next year's presidential election.

The chief prosecutor's office said Xiomara Soledad Scott, a nurse, had been killed and four others wounded.
