Governors 'High Degree of Anxiety' Over Health Care Bill

Governor Raimondo has been outspoken about healthcare saying getting rid of Obamacare would have disastrous consequences in Rhode Island.

Gov. Scott Walker, Republican of Wisconsin, who has previously voiced his irritation that the Trump administration did not originally seek the views of governors on health care, said at the luncheon that the best time for the governors to collectively weigh in would be after the Senate bill fails, according to officials in the room.

But the governors, including Republicans Charlie Baker of MA and Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, pushed back on the administration's sunnier assessments.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to build support for a revamped bill meant to make good on the GOP's longstanding promise to repeal former President Obama's Affordable Care Act.

"When I deal with all these governors here, Democrat or Republican, I'm not sure his name has even come up", NGA Chairman and Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe told Politico. He says it puts more emphasis on state control and flexibility to design health care programs.

A majority of states took the deal and are now anxious about losing the federal money they relied on to provide healthcare to millions of their residents. But he remains concerned about Congress shifting costs to the states to maintain the same level of Medicaid coverage they have committed to. One of the hot topics of discussion among the chief executives is proposed changes to the nation's health care system.

Not surprisingly, Democratic governors are highly critical of the plan.

John Bel Edwards, the Democratic governor of Louisiana, called for a bipartisan approach to healthcare that leaves the Affordable Care Act largely in place.

Now, the CBO score was the death knell for the previous Senate bill.
