Eight killed after Senegal soccer stadium wall collapse and stampede, witnesses say

EIGHT people were killed and more than 50 others injured when a stadium wall collapsed at a football match in Senegal.

Uganda boss Milutin Sredojevic and former Chelsea and Senegal frontman Demba Ba were among some of the high-profile personalities of African football to have paid their tributes to the victims of the disaster.

The minister vowed "strong measures so that such an event will never be repeated in Senegal".

Around 71 firefighters and 13 fire engines raced to battle the blaze, managing to extinguish the flames just over an hour later. At least 22 people were killed after a fire broke out in a two-storey house in eastern China, state media reported on Sunday.

Police used tear gas to keep rioting supporters from the two sides apart. "We knew exactly that some of our own had lost their lives because the wall fell directly on to people".

This prompted panic and, as fans attempted to flee the stadium, a wall collapsed under the pressure, crushing supporters. Ambulances and firefighters were immediately rushed to the scene.

The government announced the suspension of all sports competitions during the legislative elections, scheduled for July 30. Light will be shed on this tragedy, officials identified and punished.
