Barclays and former executives set for January trial over Qatar fundraising charges

The trial of four former Barclays executives charged with fraud in relation to emergency fundraisings in 2008 has been scheduled for January next year.

Varley, 61, of Notting Hill, Roger Jenkins, 61, of Malibu in California, Thomas Kalaris, 61, of Kensington and Richard Boath, 58, of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, were charged last month with conspiracy to commit fraud over a June 2008 bid to raise billions of pounds in capital. All four of the former executives were present at Southwark Crown Court.

The Serious Fraud Office charges relate to £322m in fees Barclays paid the Qatar Investment Authority and a $3bn loan facility it made available to the nation as part of side deals to the £12bn fundraising from the Qataris and others.

Varley, Jenkins and the bank face a second like charge of fraud by false representation, between 1 September 2008 and 30 November 2008. It followed that up in October of the same year with a fresh £7bn capital raising.

None of the defendants were arraigned today (mon) and will not be asked to enter their pleas until sometime next year.

Mr Justice Edis listed the trial for that date.

Jenkins, who left the bank in 2009, was investment banking chief.
