Qatar row : Saudi Arabia, allies extend ultimatum by 48 hours

A quartet of Arab nations said they have received Qatar's response to their demands for ending a diplomatic crisis gripping the Gulf.

The demands were made after the four countries severed their diplomatic and trade relations with Qatar following its failure to honour its pledges made in 2013 and 2014 to stop interfering in their domestic affairs and to end its support for terror groups.

Doha has publicly rejected the implementation of the 13 points of the ultimatum.

The foreign ministers from the four countries will meet in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss Qatar.

Qatar, like the countries lined up against it, is a USA ally.

Can Qatar-Gulf rift be repaired?

Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohamed Bin Abdel-Rahman Al Thani arrived in Kuwait on Monday to deliver an official response to the demands.

In an attempt to shore up diplomatic support for the embargo, the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, unexpectedly attended the Summit of African Union leaders in Addis Ababa.

"No, they can not take such a decision because it should be by consensus", Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdulrahman said during a meeting at the Chatham House think tank in London. The four states stated that if Qatar does not comply with the demands, the crisis with Doha will continue and they will impose additional sanctions.

He also revealed that Qatar's neighbors are plotting to topple its emir and warned the Saudi-led Arab states that, historically, Qatar had proven it was not an easy country to be "swallowed up".

"We are anxious that the distrust and the disunity could weaken all the parties concerned as well as the entire peninsula", said Gabriel, who will visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Qatar on Thursday said the list contained some demands impossible to meet because the underlying accusation was untrue.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan said Tuesday it was "premature" to discuss what further action might be taken against Qatar.

Qatar denies supporting terrorists and has defended its close ties with Iran.
