Military details USS Fitzgerald collision

The response of the crew of the severely damaged USS Fitzgerald was swift and effective, and I want to point out - as we stand by the ship - how proud I am of them, Navy Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, commander of the USA 7th Fleet, said today at a press conference in front of the stricken ship thats now moored in Yokosuka, Japan.

On Saturday the ship returned under its own power to port in Yokosuka, Japan, though it sustained severe damage from its collision with the ACX Crystal, which is significantly larger than the Fitzgerald.

Later that day, divers had an opportunity to inspect the damage more thoroughly and located the bodies of seven crew members the Navy had initially listed as missing.

Seven Dead and Three Wounded in Saturday's Incident JAPAN - In the early hours of the morning of Saturday, 17 June the US Navy destroyer USS Fitgerald (DDG 62) and the APX Crystal, a 30,000 dwt container ship, were involved in a serious collision at the entrance to Tokyo Bay.

A significant portion of the crew on the USA ship was asleep when the collision occurred, tearing a gash under the warship's waterline and flooding two crew compartments, the radio room and the auxiliary machine room.

At the press conference, Aucoin described the damage as "extensive", adding that there was a big puncture and gash below the waterline on one side of the ship. Given that this was where the damage to the destroyer was inflicted, questions will be raised over whether the USA ship could have been at fault.

"The water flow is tremendous, and so there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea...", he said.

NYK has also offered its condolences and promised full cooperation in the investigation.

The ACX Crystal collided with the USS Fitzgerald off Japan's coast, killing seven of the destroyer's crew of almost 300.

Maersk says working on recovery plan after cyber attack
The group confirmed that the attack forced the company to shut down IT systems to help contain the issue. The attack was subjected to two terminals in the cargo port of Rotterdam and 15 more around the world.

The USS Fitzgerald was struck by the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal near the port city of Yokosuka - the home base for the US ship. And as you can see now the ship is still listing, so they had to fight the ship to keep it above the surface.

"I ask that you [keep] your thoughts and prayers for the family members and the crew", USA 7th Fleet commander Vice Admiral Joseph P. Aucoin said at a press conference Sunday afternoon local time.

In a statement, acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley said, "We are all deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our fellow shipmates".

The Navy said the incident was under investigation. Japan's Transport Safety Board also started an accident investigation.

He said the destroyer was hit on the side and there was a significant impact.
