US lawmakers urge Trump to press Modi on trade, investment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his current visit to the United States, urged the CEOs of various US-based companies to ramp up investments in India, even as he looked to offset the threat of terror in the country by bringing up the issue of surgical strikes.

Days before the Modi-Trump meeting, the Trump administration authorized the sale of unarmed surveillance drones to India. Modi is the second-most-followed global leader, with over 30 million Twitter followers, second to Trump, who has nearly 33 million followers.

Modi, who is now in the United States on a two-day tour, will meet President Donald Trump for the first time on Monday.

Modi, who arrived in the United States on Sunday, will hold summit talks with Trump on Monday afternoon in the White House.

The two governments are working on a joint statement about fighting terrorism, and a senior White House official says: "We can expect to see some new initiatives on counterterrorism cooperation".

All these visits have laid the ground work for several MoUs that are likely to be signed during Modi's visit. Ties between Israel and India are on a "constant upswing", the Israeli premier said.

Praising Prime Minsiter Modi, another expat said Modi has enhanced the status of Indian people across the world and we are not anxious about the H1B Visa as there are no hurdles for students who know work.

Most of the Indian community members expressed confidence in Prime Minister Modi's vision of making India a developed country.

Modi on Sunday was to meet with top American business leaders ─ including the heads of Apple, Microsoft and Google ─ ahead of his meeting the following day with Trump.
