SpaceX successfully completes back-to-back launch missions

With this launch complete, there are now 20 Iridium NEXT satellites in orbit.

SpaceX has completed two back-to-back successful missions this weekend, the company's quickest launch turnaround yet, the media reported.

After launching as scheduled from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 1:25 pm local time (2025 GMT), the Falcon 9's first stage returned less than eight minutes after taking off. Together with "Of Course I Still Love You" for Cape Canaveral launches, the company's drone ships - landing platforms in the ocean - take inspiration from sci-fi author Iain M. Banks. The booster was previously used in a January mission.

Sunday's countdown proceeded smoothly to zero at 4:25:14 p.m. ET when the Falcon 9's nine Merlin 1D first-stage engines ignited and throttled up, generating 1.7 million pounds of thrust and a billowing cloud of exhaust.

The private space company confirmed that the 10 satellites were successfully deployed as per the plan. The Falcon's second stage is continuing to carry the satellites toward orbit.

This was the second launch and landing in 48 hours for SpaceX, adding more real world proof to Musk's dream of making space travel as common and frequent as airplane flights.

On Friday, 23 June a Falcon 9 using a refurbished first stage launched from Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Some of the new satellites will be so-called on-orbit spares, or older satellites that remain in orbit on standby for use if the newer ones malfunction.

The first re-entry was believed to have occurred on June 11, Desch said. In a historic first, upon completion this system will provide air traffic control organizations and aircraft operators that purchase the service with 100 percent, real-time, global visibility of their aircraft.

Even more impressive is the fact that SpaceX accomplished this second mission under what CEO Elon Musk described as extreme weather.
