Donald Trump says tapes bluff 'wasn't stupid' and kept James Comey 'honest'

That special counsel, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller, is now reportedly investigating Mr Trump's own actions in a probe that could dog his presidency for the foreseeable future.

Trump did not say exactly what he thought had changed about Comey's story.

Trump on May 12 floated the idea he had an audio record of their conversations, seemingly as a way to intimidate Comey.

Mr Comey has suggested that the tweet prompted him to ask an associate to release damaging information to The New York Times.

Now, Trump's suggesting there was a strategy behind the mention of "tapes" - to keep Comey honest.

Spicer went on to mention an aspect of Comey's testimony that the Trump administration has been eager to amplify: the fact that Comey said Trump himself was not under investigation in the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

"It's an fantastic thing", Trump said in another Fox interview that is scheduled to air on Sunday, excerpts from which were released Friday afternoon.

"The reality is that he wanted to make sure the truth came out and by talking about something like tapes it made people have to-made Comey in particular think to himself, 'I'd better be honest, I'd better tell the truth about the circumstances regarding the situation, '" Spicer said. Investigators will also weigh Comey's credibility against the president's.

Independents went for Comey over Trump, 47 to 17 percent.

"There's been no collusion, no obstruction and virtually everybody agrees to that", Trump told Fox, adding that Mueller "is an honorable man and hopefully he'll come up with an honorable solution".

"I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meetings, so I thought it important to document", Comey said.

Neither Trump nor the White House gave out recordings since then and were reluctant to confirm if such recordings did exist.
