Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton claims pole to pip Ayrton Senna's mark

Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton claims pole to pip Ayrton Senna's mark

All of this allowed Daniel Ricciardo to battle his way from 10th place on the grid to take Red Bull's first win of the season, leading Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and F1 rookie Lance Stroll, who took Williams' first podium in over a year in just his eighth grand prix start.

Hamilton was on Vettel's tail on the last lap, but could not overtake.

Vettel's sanction saw him drop from second to ninth but he recovered to extend his championship lead over Hamilton to 14 points.

"I think it's just not driver conduct". Risky driving, 10 second penalty for that sort of thing?

"That was one of the most exciting laps that I've had all year", he told Sky Sports.

"Nothing happened, did it?"

Warmbier's family said they believe otherwise. "People are so happy now because it is more like it's civilized again, " he said. But it's unclear how he came to be in that state.

Angered by the apparent brake test, Vettel moved to the side of Hamilton and steered towards the Mercedes, causing the pair to make contact a second time.

"I'm sure he didn't do it on objective but for sure it was not the right move".

"But what I'm most proud of today is the huge effort the team put in overnight to switch on the vehicle". I didn't know if I could do it or not, but I got it as well as I could. I think he disgraced himself today.

"I passed him because he pitted. With the place, with the feeling that we had, I'll happily take it and I'm not surprised with the time difference".

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his auto during the Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sunday, June 25, 2017. The damage was not big enough for major damage but incenced Vettel, who then drove alongside Hamilton, waved his right arm and drove into the side of the No.44 vehicle.

Hamilton's Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas finished second after overcoming a first-lap collision with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen that forced him to pit.

If not, they took a tough vote that could cost them in their re-elections without an actual law to show for their gamble. If he sees somebody on TV and he thought they did something good, he'll pick up the phone and just call them directly".

The safety auto was deployed on Lap 12 to allow Daniil Kvyat's stricken Toro Rosso to be recovered after an engine issue, sparking the lead drivers to dive into the pits. With Mercedes and Ferrari in the top four, Max Verstappen qualified fifth while Force India had another impressive display as they qualified sixth and seventh.

Vettel was angry after he had originally gone into the back of Hamilton's auto while the British ace was backing up the field ahead of the restart.

Hamilton accused Vettel of "disrespectful" driving after the four-time champion pulled alongside Hamilton and appeared to deliberately swerve into him when they were behind the safety vehicle approaching the midway point of a stop-start race.

It appeared Hamilton had done nothing untoward, but the German was clearly irate and pulled alongside the Mercedes, waving an arm, before turning into his vehicle.

He will be joined in an all-Mercedes front row by Bottas, who was pipped at the death when Hamilton outpaced him in the final lap after the session had been paused by a red flag.

Moments later, Massa retired, as did Renault's Nico Hulkenberg after clipping the barriers.
